Our Project
Romaphobia in the Age of Populism is a two-year project funded by the European Commission under Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions. The project is based at Loughborough University, London at the Institute for Diplomacy and International Governance.
The project provides a comparative analysis of UK and Swedish media, investigating the racism toward the Roma, the largest and most marginalised group in Europe.

Core objectives
- Examine overt and covert forms of anti-Roma racism or Romaphobia in the UK and Swedish media
- Compare media discourse relating to Roma in the UK and Swedish media
- Compare how mainstream and social media (Twitter and YouTube) construct representations of Romani people, identity and culture
- Explore the role of visual images in creating or sustaining Romaphobia
- Explain the relationship between populism and racism
- Elucidate how racism often becomes naturalised in the public discourse
Our Mission
The results of the project will be used to identify and propose policy recommendations to tackle the social inequalities experienced by the Roma in Europe.
